A monthly community newsletter: The Altar Within—notes on life, magic, and liberation.(Exclusive offering for paid subscribers: learn more here
Hello community,
Today I’m sharing 6 quick calls to action—each one includes a ready-to-use script and takes 10 minutes or less of your time.
Every month, I’ll be curating a small but powerful list of actions you can take to stay informed, engaged, and rooted in the ongoing fight for liberation and justice. Some of these actions are about resisting harmful policy changes, others about amplifying voices, protecting access, and simply doing what is right.
All of these are rooted in literary activism—because our libraries, our books, our stories, and the freedom to access them are at the heart of every movement for justice.
Let’s keep showing up. Let’s keep turning the page toward change—together.
With love,
Juliet
If you haven’t already heard, I run a book club called Book Coven—a community where we don’t just read, we take action. Alongside our book discussions, we share calls to action inspired by the themes, truths, and questions within the books we read.
You can join us and be part of a community committed to collective learning, unlearning, and action.
Write for Solidarity
Write to NP Teams in Sudan
Send a message of solidarity to NP’s team and civilians in North Darfur leading civilian protection. Let them know they are not alone. That people are watching, advocating, and demanding the protection of civilians alongside us. They are doing their part. Now the world must do theirs.
What Were the Real Reasons that Trump Fired the Librarian of Congress?
The Trump administration fired one of the most respected, celebrated, and qualified librarians in America.
SEND AN EMAIL: Tell Congress to Reinstate the Librarian of Congress!
Put Congress on notice: No cuts to Medicaid or public education!
President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have emboldened politicians to sell out our families, all to help the rich get richer. A budget that slashes healthcare, public services and education is a bad deal for America.
We're demanding that our leaders put families first and say NO CUTS to crucial programs.
NO CUTS to Medicaid, the largest health insurance program in the country. Proposed cuts to Medicaid would strip healthcare from millions of children and families, threaten the stability of our communities by forcing hospitals to close, push seniors and people with disabilities out of nursing homes or leave them without in-home care, and wipe out thousands of healthcare jobs.
NO CUTS to public schools, which prepares our K-12 and college students for careers and life. Dismantling the Department of Education and gutting federal support for education means fewer teachers and school staff, more crowded classrooms, and increased mental health and behavioral challenges. Students will lose services they rely on, and states will have to raise taxes to maintain them.
The American people did not vote for chaotic and reckless attacks on our kids, our loved ones, and vital public services. We always put our families first. Time for our elected leaders to do the same. Send your representatives a letter now.
Tell Congress to #FundLibraries
From the American Library Association: It's time to take action to Fund Libraries for Federal Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26), which will start on October 1, 2025. Learn more about the campaign and spread the word with our tools and resources below.
We need your support: Urge your members of Congress to sign "Dear Appropriator" letters in support of federal library funding requests. As ALA fights for the future of library funding in court, we need every advocate to tell Congress to #FundLibraries.
Save the Institute of Museum & Library Services
On Friday, March 14th, Trump signed an executive order that calls for there elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the nation’s only federal agency for America’s libraries. Americans have loved and relied on public, school and academic libraries for generations. By eliminating the only federal agency dedicated to funding library services, this EO is cutting off at the knees the most beloved and trusted of American institutions and the staff and services they offer:
Early literacy development and grade-level reading programs
Summer reading programs for kids
High-speed internet access
Employment assistance for job seekers
Braille and talking books for people with visual impairments
Homework and research resources for students and faculty
Veterans’ telehealth spaces equipped with technology and staff support
STEM programs, simulation equipment and training for workforce development
Small business support for budding entrepreneurs
To dismiss some 75 committed workers and mission of an agency that advances opportunity and learning is to dismiss the aspirations and everyday needs of millions of Americans. And those who will feel that loss most keenly live in rural communities. Call on your representatives to show up for America’s libraries and urge the White House to maintain the IMLS’s modest federal funding.

Take Action To Save Federal Funding for Libraries!
The Executive Order states that IMLS must be reduced to its "statutory functions.” It also requires that “non-statutory components and functions …shall be eliminated to the maximum extent…”.
We are extremely concerned that the wording of this E.O. could result in cuts to the core functions of IMLS. The Administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have used similar E.O.s to dismantle the other federal agencies.
IMLS’s statutory obligations to state libraries include federal funding through the Grants to States program, the National Leadership Grant program, and all current contracts, grants, and awards. This core work cannot be disrupted or dismantled by DOGE.
